Winterville Neighborhood Bikeway
Overview & goals
This 3-month pilot project is built around a 4.2-mile bike route designed to use low-stress streets, multimodal connectors, and bike lanes to connect schools, parks, public services, and Winterville’s downtown businesses. The route can be ridden both directions and provides a core route that riders can use to connect other parts of their trips. Have you ridden the bikeway? Project goals:
- Help residents identify safe routes to destinations through wayfinding and shared lane symbols.
- Identify if this style of low-cost roadway activation can encourage more trips by bike.
- Foster a culture of active mobility through several community bike “parties.”
- Identify locations of greatest need for additional infrastructure improvements for people biking, informing the upcoming Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan.

Signage: The bike route is marked with bright yellow 8x12” wayfinding signs along the route, and by temporary “shared lane markings” (also called “sharrows”) installed with short-term outdoor spray paint.
Community rides
Our Safe Routes to School program will host three community rides, all to start from Recreation Park at 5p (arrive by 4:45) on the 4th Saturday in May, June, and July. A shorter route will be available for young pedalers (1.5 mi total, going only to downtown Winterville), though the overall pace will be very relaxed and family-friendly! Children who would like to ride independently should be able to balance a two-wheeled bike (no training wheels, please). Cargo bikes, child seats, and trailers are also welcome! Free helmets will be available to any child that needs one before the ride begins (adults, helmets are strongly encouraged for you too!). Snacks will be available at the start/finish, and at one stop during the ride.
- May 23rd, 5-6:30p: Pedals and Palm Trees Ride (tropical/island theme – get out your leis and aloha shirts!)
- Snack/dessert stop at the Depot (pivot point/shorter route = 2.8 mi)
- June 27th, 5-6:30p: Ice Cream Social Ride (join us for a sweet treat stop in the middle of the ride!)

- July 25th, 5-6:30p: Tour de Bikeway!
- Participants will get a mini “passport” at the start of the ride. There will be multiple stops along the ride. Getting stickers at any three stations will make you eligible to get a bike bell, u-lock, bike lights, or tire levers + patch kit. Everyone with four or more stickers will be eligible for one of the three previous prizes and be entered in a raffle for one of two $100 gift cards to Greenville Bicycle Company (gift cards will be randomly drawn and delivered electronically after the event). Meet us back at Recreation Park for the final raffle!

Bike Education Classes
We host free bike education classes a few times throughout the year for kids of all ages and at all stages in their biking journey! If you would like to hear about upcoming SRTS events and bike education opportunities, please fill out this form to join our announce list.
We have scheduled our spring 2026 bike classes. Register for free here. Bikes will be available to borrow for those who need one, along with free helmets (to keep). All classes will be held at Hillcrest Park in Winterville. Open to all area kids!

Quick Build Project
