Winterville Parks and Recreation Internship Spring 2019

The Town of Winterville Parks & Recreation Department is looking for a talented student interested in gaining hands-on experience in parks and recreation programming, administration, and maintenance through a paid internship with Winterville Parks and Recreation. The internship program seeks to expose the student to the many facets of parks and recreation management through participation in unique educational and professional development activities, with the goal of gaining valuable work experience in recreation administration, programming, facility management, and park management.

The internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as those who have recently completed their undergraduate or graduate programs and are seeking temporary practical training.  Applicants should be enthusiastic and self-motivated, have strong communication, analytical reasoning, and research skills, as well as knowledge of recreation programming principles and methods. Must be able to work under time constraints, multi-task, and work independently as well as within a team. 

Specific duties during the internship include (but not limited to) maintenance, programming, and administrative work agendas. Assisting in the development and operation of recreation programs related to environmental education, cultural arts, senior citizens, athletics, health and fitness, summer camp, and other areas of recreation programming.  Maintenance of parks and facilities which include operating machinery such as mowers, weed-eaters, paint machines, etc. The internship is extremely hands on and will require quick learning, and the ability to think on your feet.

The rate of pay is $8.00 per hour for twelve weeks at an average of 40 hours per week. Office hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Weekend and evening work may be required, must have a flexible schedule. The position will begin January 7th and conclude March 29th.

FIRE/RESCUE/EMS

FIREFIGHTER

The Town of Winterville is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of full-time Firefighter.   Work involves completing extensive classroom and field training for firefighting, rescue and ems operations, operating fire-rescue-ems communication equipment, maintaining all fire-rescue-ems equipment and vehicles, and other associated duties.  Applicant must be able to follow all applicable guidelines and protocols. Employees in this class are subject to hazard associated with fire, rescue and ems including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, fire, smoke, odors, mists, oils, chemicals, and bodily fluids. Environments are inherently dangerous.  Ability to function on a regular basis while using personal protective equipment to include SCBA is required.

Graduation from high school or the equivalent and some firefighting experience. Qualified applicants must also meet and maintain minimum qualifications for position as established by the Department, and have a valid North Carolina Class B Non-CDL Driver’s License.

FIRE ENGINEER

The Town of Winterville is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Fire Engineer.   Work involves providing intermediate protective service work and technically difficult work to include driving fire apparatus, operating fire pumps and other fire, rescue, and ems equipment, and performing other fire, rescue, and ems assignments as needed. Employees in this class are exposed to the significant hazards of emergency fire, rescue, and EMS work, including risk of exposure to hazardous and IDLH environments.  Ability to function on a regular basis while using personal protective equipment to include SCBA is required.

Position requires graduation from high school or the equivalent and considerable experience in fire-rescue-ems operations including some supervisory experience. Qualified applicants must possess have a valid North Carolina Class B Non-CDL Driver’s License and Firefighter I and II Certifications. Ability to obtain Technical Rescuer certification issued by N.C Fire & Rescue Commission, EMT-Basic issued by State of North Carolina, approval by the Pitt County Medical Director to Practice as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic/Intermediate/Paramedic, Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician Certification within twelve (12) months of hiring, and clearance by physician to utilize respiratory protection including but not limited to SCBA and SABA within 90 days of hiring.

Fire-Rescue-EMS Recruitment, Retention and Member Development Officer

The Town of Winterville is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Fire/Rescue/EMS Recruitment, Retention and Member Development Officer.   Work involves performing difficult professional and administrative work directing the activities of the Firefighters/EMTs, works with the volunteer officers to accomplish the Department's goals, does related work as required. Performs intermediate technical and protective service work ensuring assigned apparatus, equipment and facilities are maintained in appropriate readiness, operating firefighting and rescue apparatus in a safe and efficient manner, assisting with technical expertise and equipment operation in technical rescue operation, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Position requires graduation from high school or the equivalent and considerable experience in fire-rescue-ems operations including some supervisory experience.
